TEAM ROSTER.

I am a 32 year old father of one who started biking four years ago, and I am set to embark on my first full season of racing. While I enjoy a good laugh and hope to bring a lighter side to our team events, I also appreciate the team atmosphere and opportunity to race and compete with a group of like-minded riders. My passion for sports runs deep, and cycling provides an opportunity to get out for a relaxed ride by myself or a competitive team ride and road race.

I look forward to a strong season of racing with Niklas Group and hope to achieve my goals and help my team members achieve theirs.

Brian moved to Calgary from the UK in July 2009 and joined Team Niklas after reading an article in Impact magazine. Since then he has raced several times for the team which included winning the Tour de Bowness, Alberta road race championships for 4th categories and several cyclo cross races. Prior to moving to Calgary, Brian raced for a team in the UK. Since starting racing when he was 13 years old he has successfully raced as an Elite level road rider, represented Great Britain at cyclo cross at junior and espoir level and spent a season racing in France, racing for CA Evron in the Mayenne Region. He has also completed four marathons and has a personal best of 2.49 from Stockholm in 2006.

Brian also enjoys mountain biking and cycle touring and has cycled around most European countries over the last 20 years especially the Alps and Pyrenees. He has also really enjoyed cycling with Team Niklas and is looking forward to helping the team develop in 2010 and beyond.

I cycle because I don’t want to get old. I race for the competitive spirit in me, to be a part of a team and to learn my real limits. If I did not cycle, I would be lazy, irritable and boring. Cycling is not my priority in life, but what other reasons do you need to get up at 6:00 am?
My goals are to stay upright and finish races. Eventually I would like to move up to Cat 3 and in the longer term I want to compete in and finish an Etape du Tour; I love to cycle in Europe every summer and hope to climb Ventoux when I’m 50.

I fell head over heels with cycling in 7th grade. In the intervening 30+ years, I’ve had my butt on a bike seat for close to 100, 000 kilometres; each of my daily commutes adds almost 50 km to my lifetime total. In 1997 I started dabbling in triathlons, but since I’m an abysmal swimmer and a mediocre runner, I decided in 2009 to focus solely on bike racing. Team Niklas recruited me after I placed second in my first road race; two weeks later, wearing a Niklas jersey, I won Gold in the Provincial Road Race Championships (Cat 5).

I became passionate about bikes well after I finished University with a BKin degree…..so, rather late in life. I spent most of my youth playing an assortment of team sport and decided in the late 90’s to give Running a fare shake which led to Cycling a couple of years later. The Mountain Bike Racing is what really got me hooked as a cyclist as it is a fantastic blend of both technical skill and physical conditioning. Later I became interested in Road Racing, first as a means of further conditioning for Mountain Bike Racing, and then more recently as an easy means to get out and stay fit with a family of five. As a father who loves to spend time with his children, I have dialed back my training intensity over the past 6 years but have plans to launch back into the realm of heavy competition as they get older, and hopefully too, inspire my children to be involved in competitive sport. Current goals this year include getting my fitness back, slimming down, and beginning with some stage racing to build the mileage up on the competitive scene once again. I have also taken on the role of co-coaching this team with my business partner of Aerobic Power Haus, “Jack VanDyk” with the push of seeing Niklas athletes regularly on the podium!

Started riding at 13 and working in a local bike store at 15. Participated in the local high school cycling program run by Harry Curtis (former national coach) which was great fun exposing us to ITT, TTT, Road Race, Crit and Matched sprints. Working at Fresh Air Experience for 10 years through school and being on their team we were a group of 6-8 against the other local store team Petries. Learned lots about tactics here. Got my first mountain bike in 1987 as we all did as this was the first year they came out. We of course immediately headed for the muddiest and steepest hills we could find. Did the Chequamegan 40 mountain bike race a number of years (that’s 40 miles). Greg Lemond participated a couple years as off season training in September though I only ever saw him on the podium. Participated in Ontario provincials a number of times. 24hrs of Adrenalin in Canmore 5 times with 2 and 3 rd finishes on 4 and 5 man teams.
Best results: 3rd at an Ontario Cup stage race, 40km ITT 57 min, 15km ITT 20 min, Olympic distance triathlon (only one ever) 2hr, 05 min.
Cat 3/Expert rider in those days.

I started cycling in 2006 due to influence from my brother who was racing in Halifax. I immediately fell in love with the speed and challenge involved. I started racing in 2008 with Calgary Crank Masters Cycling Club, and now am a member of Team Niklas. I enjoy the team tactics and sense of pride when the team does well in a race. I look forward to racing with Team Niklas, and hope that I can contribute to our success on the road.
